The History of Kona in 1969, Mike Sciarra started constructing surfboards in the family garage in Wildwood Crest. It was a year of incredible events in America including the Woodstock Festival, the inauguration of Richard Nixon as the 37th President and the first moonwalk. He started surfing when he was 12 and you can still find him riding the waves at the Jersey Shore. Mike attended the University of Hawaii and earned a degree in business, that has helped his company thrive. Mike also learned the art of shaping and glassing surfboards from the masters who lived at the North Shore. The original Womens Kona Clothing was opened a year later in 1970 as a small surf shop. Surfboards were shaped and glassed in the rear and sold out front. During those days, the only apparel the store carried was a handful of Hang Ten surf trunks, and O.P. Cord walk shorts. By the late 70's, Kona expanded to include 10 speed bikes, footwear and additional surf wear. Surfboards are no longer made at the store, but surfboards are still an important part of the business, along with skateboards, body boards and skim boards.Womens Kona Clothing
