In 1969, Mike Sciarra started constructing surfboards in the family garage in Wildwood Crest. It was a year of incredible events in America including the Woodstock Festival, the inauguration of Richard Nixon as the 37th President and the first moonwalk. The NY Jets won the Superbowl and the NY Mets won the World Series and it only cost 6 cents for a first class postage stamp. Mike had a fond love for the ocean that continues to this day. He started surfing when he was 12 and you can still find him riding the waves at the Jersey Shore. Mike attended the University of Hawaii and earned a degree in business, that has helped his company thrive. Mike also learned the art of shaping and glassing surfboards from the masters who lived at the North Shore.The original Kona was opened a year later in 1970 as a small surf shop. Surfboards were shaped and glassed in the rear and sold out front. During those days, the only apparel the store carried was a handful of Hang Ten surf trunks, and O.P. Cord walk shorts. By the late 70's, Kona expanded to include 10 speed bikes, footwear and additional surf wear. Surfboards are no longer made at the store, but surfboards are still an important part of the business, along with skateboards, body boards and skim boards. From humble beginnings, Kona has grown into one of the largest and best merchandised specialty stores. Every year Mike and his wife Dee , along with long time manager Tony , strive to buy the best lines available forthe season. They continue to identify hot products including clothing, footwear and accessories.
